Academics
Math
Math Makes Sense is the curriculum used by all grades. It is an Ontario approved curriculum that meets and exceeds all the new math standards. This program develops understanding of math concepts, not just rote memorization.
Students learn to apply their computational skills to everyday situations through an interactive hands on approach.
Science / Social Studies
True North Academy takes a very interactive and hands on approach to Science and Social studies. Emphasis is put on field trips and group work to encourage a desire to explore the world around us. We follow the Ontario Curriculum Standards in determining the topics that are taught to each grade.
French
Our emphasis on a second language starts right at kindergarten. With the younger grades, vocabulary development is empasized. By grade 4 students are instructed in the Core French program outlined by the Ministry of Education. Students work on oral expression, reading and writing in French. Our goal is to adequately prepare students to meet the requirement of grade nine French and inspire students to consider French as a second language throughout their highschool studies.
Language Arts
Our curriculum includes a reading program that is designed to develop appreciation for different genres, and one that directly teaches comprehension skills, vocabulary and phonics. Creative Writing skills are worked on in all grades along with spelling and grammer.
Bible Study
Everyday we begin as a whole group with devotions and Bible verses that help the students directly apply the character trait being emphasized that month. Students are given the opportunity to pray for one another and truly develop a caring atmosphere. In class, Christian values are emphasized all day, as we teach the students how to love and care for one another, using Jesus as an example. Bible Study, included in our weekly timetable, is developed by the classroom teacher to meet the needs of the grade being taught. Our focus is to honour God in all we do!
